Goal: Accelerate scale up of high impact integrated RMNCH interventions

2015 was a difficult year for health projects in Sierra Leone. With the prolonged Ebola epidemic, normal programmatic activities remained stalled in the first half of the year.

However, the catalytic nature of the RMNCH Fund set in motion activities which will be continued and are expected to have lasting impact upon the quality of Reproductive Maternal Newborn and Child Health services in Sierra Leone.

To strengthen the pharmacovigilance roles in the District Health Management Teams (DHMTs), an orientation training was carried out for its members in six districts and 70 participants were trained on infection prevention and control of the Ebola virus disease.

The RMNCH Fund has been instrumental in ensuring that 75 % of health facilities benefit from systematic rollout of all approved guidelines, lists, protocols.

UNICEF also continued supporting the implementation of the community health worker  (CHW) strategy in 11 out of the 14 districts in Sierra Leone, through revising the national CHWs policy and strategy, provision of refresher training, distribution of registers and job aids and provision of 300 bicycles for effective supervision. Through UNICEF’s support, the Ministry of Health and DHMTs have just completed a geo-mapping and census of CHWs in 12 out of the 14 districts of Sierra Leone.

The family planning manual was finalized and 220 health workers received competency based training for long acting and permanent family planning methods to 130 CHCs and 14 district hospitals and are providing quality long acting and permanent family planning services. A comprehensive review of socio-cultural barriers, to strengthen integration of family planning services with RMNH service delivery was also undertaken.
